Unemployed professionals looking for banking and accountancy jobs have been urged not to head back to university if they cannot pick up work.
According to a survey of key employers, too many unemployed professionals are re-entering education to do postgraduate courses that will not necessarily help their career, reports the Times.
Conducted by the Association of Graduate Recruiters, the survey showed that while the number of vacancies in the UK jobs market fell by 8.9 per cent last year, this year's decline is expected to be far smaller, the paper stated.
Meanwhile, the AGR also noted that the jobs market is set to return to growth in 2011.
The organisation's report said: "Only those with serious academic aspirations should consider post-graduate study and it should not be treated as a fall-back position when the job search gets tough."
Speaking to the Times, the AGR's chief executive Carl Gilleard added: "Opting to take a postgraduate course because you can't think what else to do, or can't get a job, is not the right thing to do."
Earlier this month, a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers showed that the UK business managers are concerned about the possibility of the UK experiencing a double-dip recession, which could further impact on banking and accountancy jobs.
