Senior businessmen in the UK are less stressed out than those in India, China and Taiwan, research from Grant Thornton has found.

On average 56 per cent of business leaders around the world felt more stressed than they did a year ago.

In contrast, 37 per cent of business leaders in the UK, including those with city jobs, felt more stressed than at the same time last year, the survey discovered. On average stress levels in the UK actually dropped six per cent on what they were last year.

Alysoun Stewart, head of Grant Thornton's strategic services group, said: "Stress is a multibillion pound drain on the UK economy each year.

"To have 37 per cent of business owners reporting an increase in their stress levels is still a significant proportion, and it signals that more work needs to be in done in promoting work-life balance in leadership circles."

Ireland and Sweden had lower stress levels than the UK, the only two countries to do so.

The Grant Thornton survey questioned more than 7,200 business leaders in 32 countries around the globe.
