Brits who have been forced to take a job that is not necessarily related to the sector they wish to work in need not suffer as a result.
According to Write Stuff senior analyst Peter Panayotou, those who have sidestepped or taken a position they are over-qualified for can often struggle to explain the choice to potential employers.
Recent research from Badenoch & Clark revealed that as many as one in four UK professionals are in such a position, which could potentially damage their chances of landing their dream role.
However, Mr Panayotou argued that a cleverly worded CV can help get around this by drawing attention to more relevant skills.
"If there's a situation where you have taken a job that is completely unrelated, or looks like it may be below their level, the priority would be perhaps not to highlight that so much in the CV," he said.
The analyst added such roles should be relegated to an "other employment" section, with more relevant positions featuring first in a "career history" segment.
