The Big 4 accountancy firm Deloitte has organised a wide-ranging conference of 120 banking and finance leaders to address economic issues facing Europe.

Taking place in Rome, the conference will also address people management and corporate governance issues.

Both issues are considered by many business leaders to be important in protecting shareholder value.

The recently appointed chief executive of Deloitte, James Quigley, speaking at the event, said: "In order to sustain economic development there must be trust in the capital markets systems.

"Current corporate governance models, regardless of where they are in the world, were developed to generate such trust."

Those firms that fully practice good governance will have a "competitive advantage" and will be "sustainable in the long term", added Mr Quigley.

Also present at the forum as a guest speaker was the former prime minister of Spain, Jose Maria Aznar.

Europe is only growing at about half the rate of the global economy, Mr Aznar said.
