Deloitte questions qualifications proposals Proposals suggesting that a new grading structure should be introduced for degree courses in the UK have been questioned by professional services firm Deloitte.

Deloitte is the largest graduate employer in the UK and insists that replacing the centuries old degree grading system with a higher education achievement report (Hear) would in many cases an employer's graduate assessment process more difficult.

However, Deloitte's response to the suggestions from the Burgess Group, indicated that the Hear system could offer benefits in assessing the credentials of graduates who narrowly fall short of a specified recruitment criteria.

"At Deloitte we receive in excess of 15,000 applications for 1,400 graduate and undergraduate positions which are assessed across a range of criteria," said Sarah Shillingford, graduate recruitment partner at Deloitte.

"One of these criteria is for students to achieve a 2:1 degree. This provides students with clear and transparent information about our selection process."

Last week, the University of Leicester's vice chancellor Professor Bob Burgess made the case for reforming the degree classification system in the UK in the Telegraph, claiming that such reforms were "long overdue".
