Accountancy salaries are 'too low' Three in five part-qualified accountants are not satisfied with their salary, revealed a new survey.

Reported in the Birmingham Post, assistant accountants were found to be the unhappiest, with 74 per cent expressing dissatisfaction with their pay.

A pay rise would stop 74 per cent of trainee accountants leaving their current job, the survey claimed. It also showed that accountancy jobs in Ireland, London, the South coast, Thames Valley and Scotland were the most generously paid.

"Employees are now looking to achieve a greater work/life balance as indicated by their desire for alternative benefits such as flexible hours and flexi-time," said Phil Sheridan, UK managing director of Robert Half Finance and Accounting.

The research was carried out by the specialist recruitment agency with PASS magazine and claimed that on average, male accountants are paid over £3,000 more than their female counterparts.

According to Accountancy Age, when newly qualified accountants leave the industry for another career path, "a surprising number" change their mind and return within a year.
