The UK has remained Europe's favourite investment destination over the last decade, says the Ernst & Young Investment Monitor (EIM).
It revealed there have been 5,539 projects generated in that time, 43 per cent more than France and 200 per cent more than Germany.
The US is responsible for the majority of all UK investment, generating a third of all projects since 1997.
"A skilled workforce, a world-class services sector, location and language have all helped the UK outperform the rest of the continent in attracting foreign capital over the last decade," said chairman of Ernst & Young Mark Otty.
London led the way in UK investment, increasing by up to 170 per cent by since 2001. However projects in the north-west and Wales have decreased by more than fifty percent. The EIM explained that this may be due to the shift away from the manufacturing sector which is often based outside of London.
According to Manufacturingtalk, Britain's manufacturing industry has been affected by competitors in the rest of Europe and the Far East where labour is typically cheaper.
