First of all... Happy New Year!

We’re sure 2008 is going to be the best year yet and to make sure that happens we’ve got some big problems to fix! Throughout December last year we ran a survey to find out how you feel about your current role. A worrying 57% of those who took our survey said they felt stressed as a result of their job. The main causes for this are:

  • Lack of recognition (48%).
  • Heavy workload (44%).
  • Unrealistic expectations of Supervisors (44%).

Basically, all three of your biggest issues come back to poor management. Why not start the New Year by sitting down with your Supervisor and talking through some of these issues? If you’ve been saddled with a heavy workload it might be because you always get it done on time and so your Supervisor has no idea you’re finding it difficult to cope. Perhaps suggest to your supervisor that you meet monthly, even if it’s just for a few minutes, to address any issues either of you has. Use this time to ask for feedback on your performance, this will encourage your Supervisor to start recognising and acknowledging your contribution.

Make communication your priority at work this year. You’ll probably find that your Supervisor has no idea how you feel and will be happy to rethink your duties and responsibilities to something more realistic.

And if they don’t listen? Well you know where to go for a new job!

While we’re on the subject...

Our new survey is out now. January is the time for new starts so this month our survey is all about starting out in your career. What made you choose accountancy and finance? What different career paths did you all take? We want to know!

Every month we’ll be running a new survey and for each one we’ll be awarding one lucky winner a prize from Oxfam Unwrapped! Each prize this year will be school related so you might win desk and chairs, or textbooks or pay to teach a teacher! The really exciting part is that we’ll be putting money aside each month so the twelve winners throughout the year will win one big prize to allow Oxfam Unwrapped to build a whole school!
