Although fears of a recession are abundant, accountants should not worry about demand for their skills, it has been claimed.

The US National Association of Colleges and Employers' 2008 job forecast has claimed that accounting is the degree that most employers are looking for, reports Accountancy Age.

According to the news source, accountancy firms are planning to hire the same number of employees if not more despite fears of less credit availability.

Ira Solomon, head of the accountancy department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, commented that accountancy jobs often work in contrast to the economic cycle.

"It's not the case that as the economy goes down, the demand for accountants goes down," he said.

The report also found that uptake on accounting courses grew by 27 per cent over the past two years among undergraduate and graduate students.

Credit checking firm Equifax has warned financial sector graduates that employers may wish to see their credit history during the interview process graduate accounting jobs.
