The current shortage of talent in the accounting industry is leading to record salaries, according to new research.

Robert Half's Global Financial Salary Guide found that between 2006 and 2007 salaries for an accounts assistant increased by 25 per cent, now reaching an average of £19,500.

However, at the opposite end of the scale the increases are even more significant, with a chief financial accountant earning an average of £80,000, after as little as six years in the industry.

"New regulations in the industry have resulted in a need for more professionals and have in many ways created a level playing field where both entry-level and seasoned professionals have the same opportunities to thrive and benefit financially," remarked Phil Sheridan, UK managing director of the firm.

Accountancy Age reports that a new study has found accounting is the most sought-after degree for this year.

It cites figures from the US National Association of Colleges and Employers 2008 job forecast which states accountancy firms are planning to maintain or increase their intake of graduates in 2008.
