The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is helping to bring global accountancy standards into line, it has been claimed.

ACCA vice-president Richard Aitken-Davies told Derbyshire paper the Evening Telegraph that accountants are often under pressure to produce reports which exaggerate the success of a company.

Mr Aitken-Davies stated that the introduction of an ethics module is helping shape and improve professional standards in the industry.

He explained that ACCA currently trains nearly 300,000 students across 170 countries, giving training which is not only applicable to local companies but also gives an international perspective.

"An accountancy qualification gives people the opportunity not simply to become accountants, but also finance directors, academics and to enter a whole range of different careers," Mr Aitken-Davies said.

Kevin Kernan, former director general of Engineers Ireland, has recently taken up his appointment as head of ACCA Ireland.

The new head of ACCA Scotland has been recently named as Andrew Leck, formerly of the commercial arm of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.
