The accountancy sector in Britain is making good progress when it comes to equal opportunities, it has been claimed.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) has said that accountancy firms have made "steady progress" in regard to tackling ethnic and gender inequality.

But disability-friendly recruitment and accountancy jobs in the industry still needs more attention.

Sarah Churchman, director of equality and inclusion for PWC, said: "The accountancy profession has made steady progress with regards to gender and ethnic equality.

"Whether people are personally affected by a disability or not, firms need to take immediate steps to build a culture that promotes a better understanding of working with disability."

Improving the support infrastructure and the working environment for disabled employees were two areas that firms could consider, Ms Churchman added.

The call for a more comprehensive equality policy comes as the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales starts the search for the best chartered accountants in the south-west.
