Don't panic, newly qualified accountants are told An accountant's qualification is the "absolute bedrock" of their career, it has been claimed.

Beginning an accountancy career with a good qualification and a commitment to the job is the most positive thing a graduate can do, reports Accountancy Magazine.

Alan Steward of Heirdick & Struggles claimed that the most overwhelming thing a fully qualified accountant has to do is make a decision of which path to take when they qualify.

However, Mr Stewart warned graduates not to panic, but to make a decision by sitting down and thinking about what it is they like about the profession.

"Some newly qualifieds think that they have to spend the rest of their lives justifying the time and effort they have spent getting it," he said. "Your accountancy qualification will be a good qualification, whatever you do from now on."

According to the industry expert, many students simply train to be an accountant because it seems like a good idea.

It has been revealed by Manchester Metropolitan University that the banking and finance industry employs more people in the north-west of England than any other sector.
