A leading finance professional in Guernsey has welcomed the news the island has been named as one of the world's leading 20 financial centres.

Rankings compiled by Z/Yen Group on behalf of the City of London placed Guernsey in 19th position, ahead of centres such as the Isle of Man, the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

Peter Niven, chief executive of GuernseyFinance, the body that promotes the industry on the island, told the Guernsey Press the placing represented recognition of the innovation and expertise of the island's professionals.

"Guernsey's broad-based finance industry is firing on all cylinders. Banking deposits have reached a record high and the fiduciary services sector boasts a significant number of providers," Mr Niven added.

London was ranked top of the Global Financial Centres Index - which rates jurisdictions based on factors such as the quality of accountants and other professional staff, the regulatory environment and infrastructure - ahead of New York, Hong Kong, Singapore and Zurich.
