Individuals advised to shop around for an accountant

Individuals who believe they need the help of an accountant have been advised to do some thorough research before employing a professional's services.

The growth in the number of self-employed workers and the ongoing changes to the taxation system, most notably to capital gains tax and inheritance tax, mean more people now have the need for advice from accountants.

John Whiting of the Chartered Institute of Taxation said that those in need of professional help should seek personal recommendations to ensure they find an adviser they can trust.

He also pointed out that it is important to research the market in order to find a specialist, as accountants are not experts in all areas.

"If you want tax advice, you should always go to a properly qualified tax adviser. Not all lawyers and accountants know enough about tax to be tax advisers," said Mr Whiting.

He added that the wealthy are more likely to need a specialist in trusts, while the self-employed should look for a competent accountant who can help them with their books and tax return.
