Charity calendar backfires

A group of mothers from Spain have demonstrated that saucy charity calendars are not a guaranteed winner.

Ever since Rylstone Women's Institute members shot to fame when their nude calendar raised millions for Leukaemia Research and inspired the film Calendar Girls, exhibitionists around the world have been using charity as an excuse to get their kit off.

Substantial sums have been raised for good causes and that fact inspired seven middle-aged women from Serradilla del Arroyo to follow suit, in an attempt to help the village's school, reports the Associated Press.

The first part of the project went well and a portfolio of pictures featuring the women clad only in tinsel or with umbrellas preserving their modesty was soon produced.

However, things soon went wrong and the decision to launch the calendar after the pre-Christmas rush ensured sales have been poor.

Far from raising money, the mothers have been left with a printing bill of £8,000 and hundreds of calendars that cannot even be recycled.

Whether the debacle will mark the end of the naked charity calendar era remains to be seen - perhaps it will just encourage fundraisers to release them at the right time of year.
