PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) has confirmed that Kieran Poyner's successor as chairman and senior partner will be Ian Powell.

Mr Powell is currently the firm's head of advisory but will step up to a four-year term as chairman on July 1st 2008, following a partners' vote.

The news was welcomed by Mr Poyner, who said that the new top man would be taking on a firm that is in "excellent shape".

"Ian's energy and vision are reflected in an outstanding track record and I have every confidence that he will lead this great firm to even greater things," he added.

Mr Powell joined PWC in 1977 and has been a partner for the past 17 years.

During his time with the firm he was worked in assurance and corporate restructuring, including on some high-profile projects - most notably when he was administrator to MG Rover in 2005.

Mr Powell's current business unit was recently recognised at the Real FD/CBI Finance Directors' Excellence Awards, where PWC was named Advisory Firm of the Year.
