Bonuses 'expected by 40% of workers' The economic downturn appears to have had little impact on the bonus expectations of British workers, the results of a new survey suggest.

A study by Investec Private Bank found that four out of ten people expect to receive a bonus in 2008.

Men who believe they will be paid a bonus expect to receive an average of £19,500, while the average figure women expect is just £8,400.

However, more than 80,000 employees said they think their bonuses will be worth more than £100,000 and a further 294,000 believe they will be paid more than £50,000.

The findings come against a backdrop of turmoil in the financial markets and an expectation of substantial cuts to city jobs.

Citigroup, UBS and Merrill Lynch are the latest banking groups to announce plans to reduce their global workforces following disappointing first quarter performances.

Press reports suggest more than 2,000 of the job losses will be in London.
