Racecourse operator Arena Leisure has named Antony Harris as its new finance director.

Mr Harris began his career with Arthur Andersen, where he qualified as a chartered accountant, before gaining 13 years of experience in the hospitality industry with Inter-Continental Hotels Group and Hilton International.

He worked his way up to vice-president finance (Europe, Africa and Nordic regions) at Hilton and then had a spell as chief financial officer at student accommodation business Unite Group.

The 39-year-old's background in hotels is likely to come in useful, according to a company statement announcing his appointment.

"Having recently received planning permission for three hotels to be located at Doncaster, Lingfield Park and Wolverhampton racecourses, Tony's experience will be invaluable as Arena embarks upon an exciting period of expansion," it explained.

Arena also owns Royal Windsor, Southwell, Folkestone and Worcester racecourses and its seven venues stage around a quarter of all horse racing meetings in the UK.
