The Ministry of Defence is launching a new campaign to find a qualified finance director.
It is the first in a set of deadlines unveiled for the government to face up to its financial skills while a move to employ more permanent secretaries with accounting qualifications is also on the agenda, , reports Accountancy Age
The MoD has a budget of £35 billion, which is the largest amount of government spending not managed by a qualified financial director.
Nicholas Macpherson, permanent secretary for the Treasury, told Accountancy Age the position was advertised before but "no-one came forward from the private sector".
Current finance director Trevor Woolley's job as head of the MoD's finance function appear's to be coming to an end.
A spokesman for the MoD told the website: "The MoD employs many qualified accountants in the FD's area and Woolley routinely consults them in the course of his work."
The MoD has recently been in the media spotlight after a laptop containing personal information on 600,000 potential recruits was stolen.
