A man is continuing to clean the streets of Peterborough despite retiring as a council road sweeper 14 years ago.

Philip Winfield still continues to collect an average of five bags of rubbish per day and can be seen on the roadsides as early as 5am.

The 74-year-old worked for the council for 21 years before retiring at the age of 60.

Mr Winfield said: "I didn't want to get bored and lonely in my old age. And I hate seeing litter. It just made sense, keeps me out of mischief and keeps me fit. I haven't been to a doctor in six years."

He has been commended by the city's Muslim community for his hard work. Mr Winfield was presented with a gift hamper and card.

In other news, a road sweeper from Batley has had a memorial bench dedicated to him.

The Batley News reports that traders in the village all donated money to commemorate Eddie Thorpe.
