The Ministry of Defence is set to offer its next finance director almost double the pay of the last person to hold the role.

Departing Trevor Woolley earned a maximum of £135,000, but a new report has revealed that prospective candidates are being offered over £250,000 plus bonuses.

Accountancy Age reports that the MoD have spent almost 18 months searching for the next finance director and whoever gets the role will have one of the "best rewarded jobs" in central government.

Ian Carruthers, from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, told the website: "It's complex as an organisation and, in terms of its resource accounting, nuclear decommissioning and heritage assets poses problems."

The website also reports that Barclays vice chairman Gary Hoffman is set to take over the role of chief executive of Northern Rock when Andy Kuipers leaves the job on August 31st.
