Accountancy Qualifications

What job will my qualification lead to?

With so many potential routes of study available to you it can be difficult to decide which qualification you should be aiming for. Here are some of the main accountancy qualifications available.

Qualification Description
AAT: Association of Accounting Technicians 

The AAT qualification is an ideal way to begin your career in finance and accountancy. The AAT qualification combines practical experience and exams.

Accounting technicians work alongside chartered accountants in a variety of roles such as accounts clerks and credit control officers.

ACA: Association Chartered Accountants

A leading business and finance qualification by the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales). To qualify as an ACA you need to go through a 3 year training contract with an ICAEW accredited firm.

ACCA: Association of Chartered Certified Accountants

ACCA is a professional accountancy qualification which is ideal if you want a career in accountancy practice or finance.  To qualify you will need to complete exams and a minimum of 3 years work experience.

ATT: Association of Tax Technicians

The ATT qualification was established by the Institute of Taxation, and can lead to a career in taxation. The ATT qualification enables students to gain knowledge in a specialist area of tax without having to study the full CTA qualification.

CFA: Chartered Financial Analyst

CFA is the ideal qualification if you are looking for a career in investment banking. 

CIMA: Chartered Institute of Management Accountants

The CIMA qualification concentrates on the training and qualification of accountants in business. It is suitable if you want to work in industry, commerce, management consultancy, banks, not for profit and the public sector. 

CIPFA: Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy

CIPFA is a specific accountancy qualification for those working in the public sector. Those choosing to study a CIPFA qualification will be working in the NHS, local authorities, Central Government, higher education or charities. 

CTA: Chartered Tax Advisor from the Chartered Institute of Taxation

The CTA qualification can lead to a career in taxation. Members of the Institute have the practising title of ‘Chartered Tax Adviser’. 

IFA: Institute of Financial Accountants

The IFA offers a range of qualifications, designed to meet the specific needs of finance professionals working in SME businesses, as well as those in accounting practices who advise and support SME clients.
