Now in their 11th year, the PQ Magazine Awards are the UK's premier accountancy awards with a range of categories including our favourite 'PQ Personality of the Year'.
The winner was chosen by an independent panel which included Nicki Burke, Acting Had of PR at the AAT; Professor Prem Sikka, Professor of Accounting at the University of Essex and Lisa Dendle, MD of top recruitment consultancy Walker Dendle....

...the WINNER was Ronnie David from UHY Hacker Young whose wit and inherently chatty nature has also won his personality unspoken accolades from colleagues who describe him as 'a unique individual who is not afraid to talk to anyone!'. "He has a great sense of humour and always makes me and fellow associates erupt with laughter", said one of his co workers.
He is currently employed at UHY Hacker Young, prior to which he worked at a Private limited company, the Ministry of Defence and a conglomerate of property companies. Ronnie's accountancy experience spans both public and private sectors and in addition to winning PQ Personality of the Year 2013 he has also been selected by the ACCA to be one of its prestigious 'Leaders of Tomorrow'.
Following his recent win at the PQ Magazine Awards we spoke to him about his career and achievements to date....
Q1: What is your role at UHY Hacker Young and how long have you been employed there?
My main role within UHY Hacker Young is auditing financial statements which consist of a Profit and Loss Account and Balance Sheet for a wide variety of companies who operate in different industries such as property, retail, leisure, financial services etc. Other aspects of my role include producing year end statutory accounts for different companies. I have been employed at UHY Hacker Young for about two and half years now.
Q2: What route did you take into accountancy?
Whilst at university, I did an Accounting and Business degree which has allowed me to understand in theory different aspects of accountancy such as auditing, taxation, financial accounting and management accounting. As I really enjoyed Accountancy, I managed to gain an internship at a very successful property company where my main role was producing year end statutory accounts; this has allowed me to put my theory into practice. I knew from then on that this was the right career path for me.
Q3: Why did you choose accountancy as a career?
I have always enjoyed working with numbers and analysing information quantitatively. My strong numerical skills led me to study a degree in accounting which I thoroughly enjoyed and proved to be the only career path I wanted to embark on.
Q4: What made you choose to move from the Public to Private sector and what are some of the key differences you have found between working in the public and private sector?
I chose to move from the public to private sector as I felt that this move would enable me to gain more experience across differing industries and see how they operate financially in the real world.
In the public sector I was restricted to one industry and meeting a limited amount of people/ clients but in the private sector this has not been in the case and I am constantly interacting with a wide range of people across different levels from colleagues to partners of our clients. Furthermore, I believe that moving into the private sector has allowed me to gain a more detailed and comprehensive understanding of Accountancy as a whole from a technical point of view.
Q5: What is your long term career goal?
My long term career goal is to develop my theoretical and practical knowledge of Accounting and to progress in the private sector.
Q6: What have been your greatest challenges faced on the job and how did you overcome them?
The greatest challenges on the job tend to arise when I have to complete tasks in very tight deadlines. Although challenging, this is overcome by putting in extra hours and prioritising my workload.
Q7: The ACCA has recently selected you to become one of its prestigious 'Leaders of Tomorrow'. Tell us a bit more about this achievement
The 'Leaders of Tomorrow' program aims at helping its members develop their skills as leaders and provides advice in their career progression. It also holds regular meetings in which its members can network with people in different industries. When reading about this program, I knew it was something I wanted to be part of and was delighted and proud to be accepted onto the program.
Q8: What has been your greatest achievement to date?
I would have to say winning the PQ Magazines 'Accountancy Personality of the Year' Award. I have always regarding this award very highly and to win it has left me overjoyed.
Q9: How did it feel to win the PQ Accountancy Personality of the Year award?
It was the best feeling in the world to win such an amazing award. This is definitely something I will never forget.
Q10: What is it about your personality that you think led you to win the award?
Combined with my strong work ethic and go getting attitude, I have a bubbly personality and always strive to create a fun and positive atmosphere in the workplace. I also regard myself as being friendly and easy-going with a good sense of humour and this enables me to build good relationships with colleagues, managers and partners.
Q11: What advice would you give to Part Qualified and aspiring accountants?
Work hard and stay focused. I believe if you work hard you can achieve anything. Remember what you're working for and in the long run you will reap the benefits.
