Exciting Payroll Manager opportunity to join the Head Office of a fast-growing Services business based in Runcorn, Cheshire. This is an excellent opportunity to join the business during an exciting transition period for the Payroll team. Reporting to the Head of Pay and Benefits, you will lead and motivate a team of c.10. To summarise; you will manage the activities related to the processing of payroll. You will operate as the escalation point to resolve issues and continuously look for improvements in operational processes and designs and implement those initiatives. Activities of the team may include accounting, distributing and preparing payments, benefits, taxes, and payroll deductions; calculating overtime, shift payments, sales commissions, and bonuses; ensuring correct payments are made and appropriate information provided to pension schemes, HMRC and other statutory bodies; maintaining payroll records.
Key responsibilities will include;
- Management of large payroll (c.8,000 employees) monthly paid across multiple sites (with month end consolidation and processing start to finish)
- Maintain payroll information by calculation, and entering of data and update payroll records, job titles, and department/ division transfers;
- Will need to be proactive with processing a number of payrolls including a Jersey/Guernsey payroll;
- Prepare reports by compiling summaries of earnings, taxes, deductions, leave, and non-taxable wages;
- Produce BACS files and ensure balance of payroll accounts by auditing information; identifying and resolving discrepancies; initiating journal entries; running GL files;
- Prepare ad hoc reports as required;
- Retain employee confidence and protect payroll operations by keeping information confidential;
- Support Head of Payroll and Benefits Manager with maintaining payroll guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures;
- Maintain payroll staff performance by advising and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising performance;
- Maintain payroll staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees and contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed;
- Take all action that is necessary in order to plan, organise and prioritise work;
- Check and audit of all payrolls process to ensure adjustments to legislative compliance;
- Support Head of Payroll and Benefits Manager with defining all Projects as required to improve and standardise the payroll operations and systems;
- Support Head of Payroll and Benefits Manager with planning the best way to implement legislative, procedural and system changes and to ensure that standard procedures are developed and maintained to reflect these changes;
- Ensure liaison with staff regarding all pay enquiries: Prompt maintenance of staff records at all times including archiving and filing, liaise with HR re staff appointments, terminations, remuneration, conditions of service and other relevant matters;
- Resolve out of balance accounts, errors and payment queries, to ensure the payroll runs accurately to time and all complex problem on legislative and system issues
- Reconcile all payroll payments to the financial ledger and to adjust control accounts as appropriate.
This is a brilliant opportunity for a confident, pro-active, pragmatic and driven individual with excellent leadership and interpersonal skills. You should have gained experience in a similar role, managing a large payroll across multiple sites, managing a medium/large sized team. Although you will be focused on process improvement and development of the team, you should also be willing to remain hands-on, leading by example. You should also demonstrate project management skills, which will come in useful with a pending new system implementation.
