About Appleby Westward - SPAR

Appleby Westward is the SPAR Retail Distribution Centre (RDC) for the West Country. We have a long-established local distribution service currently meeting the needs of a large number of stores from Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth in the East to Helston, Falmouth and Truro in the West and Bristol and Bath in the North. We have a strong service culture with strict 24 hour order lead times. However, Appleby Westward prides itself in being more than simply a distributor of goods and takes a very active role in helping retailers (including 69 company owned stores) increase sales and profitability. As part of the strategy of working in partnership with retailers, the company can also provide retail funding for store modernisation and assistance with funding bank loans through our unique interest free loans scheme.

Role Purpose

As the Director of Finance and IT your role will be to implement Finance and IT strategies for both Appleby Westward and its subsidiary companies e.g. Gilletts Callington Ltd. by establishing departmental accountabilities, leading and developing the teams, and ensuring suitable processes and controls are in place, fit for purpose and in line with best practice, statutory regulation and legislation. As part of the Executive team, there is also a requirement to play an active role in Board level discussions and policy formulation, and to represent the company at a senior level both within SPAR locally, nationally and externally.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Annual budgets prepared on a timely, accurately basis.
  • Identify areas of underperformance, overspend and implement an action plan to rectify.
  • Ensure the control of all departmental administrative systems and procedures.
  • Ensure weekly & period reporting is fit for purpose, timely and accurate.
  • Ensure monitoring and reporting processes are in place and corrective action taken where necessary to control bad debt, working capital, cash balances, stock levels and capital expenditure. Providing group financial forecasting is key.
  • Demonstrate excellent levels of cross departmental working.
  • Interpreting appropriate market research activity, specifically the convenience store market, and recommending actions for improvement.
  • Creating open and effective relationships with key customers and internal/external suppliers.
  • Develop a suitable people plan for the finance and IT teams through proper leadership, appraisal and development of those teams.
  • Ensure the department senior team manage in line with company policies and health and safety responsibilities.
  • Ensure I.T. infrastructure is fit for purpose, appropriately costed to the needs of the organisation, in good working order and legally compliant.
  • Ensure that company financial and other systems are robust, compliant and supported.
  • Ensure corporate budgeting processes are carried out and reviewed.
  • Provide leadership and inform the Exec of opportunities to optimise the company’s financial performance.
  • To develop and support the company’s preferred EPS and Data provision and install Retailer IT systems.
  • Adhering to group policy and applying local procedure where required, with a view to optimising the AWG cash position while minimising risk. 
  • Participate in formulating the Company’s business strategy, vision and business plan.
