Job Description

Cardiff University is looking to appoint a technically strong Head of Financial Reporting to join the University as it looks to drive its new strategy of "The Way Forward 2018-2023".

The Head of Financial Reporting plays a pivotal role in the University, ensuring the Financial and Management Reporting systems are "fit for Purpose" and help to deliver the financial promises of the new strategy.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Finance, the Head of Financial Reporting is key in providing technical and policy advice to the University. They will be responsible for taking a lead role in the compilation, analysis and communication of all financial information to meet the needs of stakeholders and ensure robust decision making to support the future financial sustainability of the University.

Leading a team of 8 staff, the Head of Financial Reporting will be responsible for making improvements and driving process improvement in;

  • Management Accounting
  • Business Planning
  • Reporting
  • Year End Accounts
  • Personal Impact and Contribution (team development)

The University's Finance Department is currently undergoing a restructure and the Head of Financial reporting will play a key role in the delivery of this new structure.

The Successful Applicant

An inspirational role requires an inspirational leader at the helm.

First and foremost, you will be a Professionally Qualified Accountant and hold a CCAB recognised qualification.

  • A technically strong Accountant, with substantial post qualification experience of working at a senior level in a similar role.
  • Able to evidence leading continuous improvement in a Finance Department.
  • An inspirational leader who is happy to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in.
  • Able to work with large and complex datasets and have a proven track record of producing high level insightful analysis from a mass of detailed data.
  • Able to demonstrate attention to detail relating to reporting, analysis and the production and outputs of the year end accounts.
  • Able to evidence ability to research and solve technical accounting problems using initiative and creativity; identifying solutions to better understand underlying trends and variances in datasets.
  • Able to demonstrate expert professional knowledge of financial systems and of working with Oracle or a similar ERP system.
  • Able to demonstrate experience of working with a variety of reporting and analysis tools.
  • Able to demonstrate proven experience in developing and improving new processes and procedures.
  • Able to lead and motivate a specialist team, balancing multiple objectives and priorities.
  • You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build rapport with a range of finance and non-finance persons across the organisation.
