Group Tax Accountant

Situated at our head office in Malton, reporting to our Group Financial Controller, this an exciting new, growth role within the Karro business that will pro-actively lead the tax function for all companies within the Karro Group structure. 

The post-holder will pro-actively ensure tax compliance and best practice is cascaded throughout the finance teams and broader business, whilst remaining alert to risk and opportunities. This is an exciting new role that will offer the incumbent a real opportunity to shape and develop the tax function, whilst adding value to the business and supporting its ambitious growth plans.

Key responsibilities:

  • Ownership, review and production of corporation tax and deferred tax calculations and returns for the Group, liaising with external bodies and internally as necessary
  • Ownership of overseas tax, ensuring that requirements for compliance are understood by internal management and all relevant companies remain compliant with local legislation
  • Ownership of VAT, ensuring that business responsibilities for compliance are understood, VAT and Intrastat returns are accurate and completed in a timely manner, appropriate payments are made or receipts are received 
  • Ownership of senior accounting officer compliance reviews
  • Responsibility for setting up and the operation of internal controls in relation to tax, liaising with advisors, management and internal audit as necessary
  • Monitoring all tax, internal audit reviews and responses for the Group, escalating and remediating where appropriate
  • Liaising with  HMRC regarding visits, audits and submissions
  • Ensure the Group tax policy is fit for purpose and signed off annually by the Board
  • Ensuring that policies, procedures and processes for all aspects of Group tax are relevant and fit for purpose
  • Liaise with external advisors where appropriate to provide tax advice and planning for the business, as required
  • Take responsibility for all tax matters relating to company acquisitions, including reviewing due diligence prior to acquisition
  • Drive process improvements
  • Ad hoc tax-related projects

Skills and experience:

  • ACA and post qualification experience (either gained from an accounting firm background or in industry)
  • Excellent technical accounting skills
  • Strong commercial exposure and business acumen
  • Continuously strives for improvement

  • Competent in driving and influencing internal company teams to mitigate risk
  • Possesses a pro-active “can-do” attitude and demonstrates initiative, whilst maximising opportunities for improvement in the business

  • Excellent communicator (both written and in verbal form) with an ability to a tailor and adapt communications for a wide variety of audiences (including Board level) and situations
  • Flexible, yet able to consistently meet deadlines and remain motivated and focused on delivery
  • Ability to work proactively both independently, or as part of a team 
  • Able to liaise with the senior management team on behalf of the Group Financial Controller, where appropriate
  • Able to provide appropriate solutions to problems
  • Proven experience of strategic decision making
