Pembroke College has a turnover of £11m and an endowment of £65m.  It is a Charity and by Charity standards, it is a large organisation that requires sophisticated and sensitive management.

Main Purpose of Job:

The Assistant Accountant will perform financial line functions, and occasionally deputise for the College Accountant. There is opportunity to learn about both the financial management of a charity in the HE sector and Charity SORP accounting.


Responsible to:College Accountant (Line Manager)

Responsible for:Accounts Apprentice

Liaison with:Bursar, Accounts staff, budget holders, bank signatories, members of the Senior Common Room (SCR) and external consultants.

 Main Tasks:

·               Production of College management accounts, including narrative commentary

·               Preparation and discussion of monthly reports with budget holders on income/cost variances

·               Preparation of budgets and in-year forecasts

·               Costing

·               Accruals and prepayments

·               Reconciliation of control accounts

.               Reconciliation and billing of fees

·               Supervision of the Accounts Apprentice if applicable

·               Banking and cash book cover for cashier during busy periods and holidays

·               Purchase ledger cover during busy periods and holidays

.               Payroll cover during holidays

·               Miscellaneous invoicing and internal charges plus debt collection

·               Maintenance of ledgers and preparation to trial balance for 2 subsidiary companies

·               VAT returns for subsidiary company

·               Maintenance of fixed assets registers

·               Assistance with preparation of Charity SORP accounts
