Finance Manager – Airline Accounting & Control
Luton, UK
This is a broad management role within finance that supports the Operations and Aviation Planning areas of TUI Airways by leading a team of accountants in providing a variety of accounting and control services. There is real scope in this role for heavy involvement in new and ongoing projects, as well as for continuous improvement across more established activities.
The Airline Accounting and Control team are part of the TUI UK&I Accounting Centre which provide accounting and control services across the various commercial businesses that make up the entire TUI UK&I organization. The Airline Accounting and Control team act as business partners to the Airline Commercial Finance teams, working together to support TUI Airways - TUI UK&I’s internal airline that operates 65 aircraft, 750 pilots, and 2,500 cabin crew and has a cost base in excess of £1bn per year.
What You will be doing:
As the Finance Manager – Airline Accounting & Control you will be responsible for promoting compliance across the Airline’s financial accounting processes, ensuring a robust balance sheet while identifying and risks and opportunities as they emerge. You will apply your strong understanding of underlying accounting policies, processes, and systems together with commercial acumen and in order to attain optimal financial outcomes for the business while preserving the integrity of the financial ledgers of TUI Airways Ltd.
This will be achieved by: maintenance of the chart of accounts; authorising journals created by the wider business; reviewing and challenging the Airline balance sheet while driving through improvements in quality and consistency of balance sheet reconciliations; leading on any technical accounting issues; deploying your expertise in supporting the Airline Commercial Finance teams through business and system changes; continuously reviewing and optimizing routine activities; and promoting a culture of continuous improvement across your team and others around you.
You will be required to assist the Airline Financial Controller with the management of the Airline relationship with the external auditors by managing the provision of schedules and supporting information, producing accounting and positioning papers to explain accounting decisions and their resultant impacts as required, and answering ad-hoc queries as they arise.
Other areas of responsibility include (but not limited to) the management and development of a team of 3 accountants; liaising with Group accounting functions to explain movements in the Airline accounts; the preparation of balance sheet forecasts including providing commentary and analysis to movements in the budget, forecast and actuals; facilitating correct intercompany accounting; providing input and challenge to the P&L forecasts and cash flow forecasts where required and assisting in work with Internal Audit to identify and correct sub-optimal internal controls and operating procedures.
What we are looking for:
- Qualified accountant with a minimum of 2 years PQE and experience of financial/management accounting and/or audit
- Strong technical accounting & analytical skills
- Good systems & process skills
- Strong knowledge of IFRS/IAS
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
- Good influencing skills
