Hays Senior Finance is proud to be partnered with Direct Rail Services (DRS) to recruit a Financial Payroll Accountant for their dynamic team in Carlisle, Cumbria. DRS is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). The company was established to supply transport and associated services to the nuclear industry. Today DRS is a profitable and dynamic business that is achieving sustained growth with current turnover levels running at around £83 million a year and employing more than 475 staff. Whilst DRS continues to support the decommissioning activities of its parent company, it has successfully extended its service offerings into a number of new and exciting rail market sectors. 

Your new role 
As part of the passionate finance team, you will be reporting directly to the Head of Finance. The Financial Payroll Accountant will initially be focused on delivering a project to develop and simplify DRS’ payroll processes and the role will also incorporate statutory reporting, management of financial audits (internal and external) and leading company compliance with new IFRS accounting standards. This is a unique and exciting opportunity that will be offered on a fixed term basis for 2 years. 

Key responsibilities of this job are: 

  • Lead payroll review project with a view to simplifying and reducing risk in this area (possible integration with Sage BCEM).
  • Responsible for the payroll function and expenses management in its entirety dealing with all problems and queries and ensuring the accurate payments are line with accounting practice.
  • Manage the NDA Interface in terms of the Management and Statutory Accounts.
  • To prepare and produce the company statutory accounts.
  • To lead all internal and external financial audits. This includes liaising with auditors, agreeing timetables, answering their queries and drawing up action plans to respond to audit points raised.
  • To provide statutory returns for tax, VAT and other government departments.
  • Responsible for the petty cash, credit card transactions and automated systems as required by the needs of the business.
  • Provide technical accounting advice on new accounting standards.
  • Management of documented accounting policies.
  • Manage many of the department’s regular external relationships (bank, Cascade, NDA, government).

The skill and experience required for this job include

  • Strong technical Qualified Accountant with a successful track record
  • Hands on / self-starter, enjoys the detail.
  • Excellent communicator, the Financial Payroll Accountant will liaise with all people of all levels including external parties
  • High level of Microsoft Excel skills
  • Payroll / Payroll Management experience is essential
