Financial Accountant - Flight Operations

The Airline Finance Accounting and Control team are part of TUI UK&I which provide Accounting and Control services to the entire TUI UK & I finance teams. The Airline Finance Accounting team act as business partners to the Airline Commercial Finance teams, which are responsible for circa 62 aircraft, 750 pilots and 2,500 cabin crew and have a cost base in excess of £1bn.

You will be a Financial accountant within in the Accounting and Control finance directorate, working closely with the Flight Operations Commercial Finance team providing a range of accounting and control services. The Airline Finance commercial team business partner the Airline business units which are responsible (amongst others) for fuel, pilots and cabin crew and overheads. 

Your role will be to provide an effective Financial Accounting and Control service to a range of internal and external customers that helps to meet the strategic imperatives of the business. The role promotes collaborative team-working, improved co-ordination of activities and promotes improved ways of working.

The role will act as a key interface between the Airline Financial Accounting and Control team and its internal and external customers, including Airline commercial finance, group finance (including treasury), intercompany and fixed assets, internal and external auditors and statutory authorities.

About this Financial Accountant role:

As the Financial Accountant for flight operations within the Airline you will be responsible for promoting compliance with the Airline operations financial accounting processes, ensuring a robust balance sheet. You must have a detailed understanding and a robust application of underlying accounting policies, processes and records in order to attain optimal financial performance for the business and preserving the integrity of the financial ledgers for TUI Airways Ltd. 

This will be achieved by: preparing journals using information from the wider business relating to revenue, costs, assets and liabilities; preparing the Airline balance sheet reconciliations in relation to flight operations to ensure the integrity of the balance sheet and to identify risks and opportunities; driving through improvements in quality and consistency of balance sheet reconciliations and supporting on any technical accounting issues.

You will be required to assist the Finance Manager with the support of the Airline relationship with the external auditors by providing relevant schedules and supporting information. You will support and coach a Finance Apprentice who will report into you and look to you for guidance whilst they are in your team.

Other areas of responsibility include (but not limited to) providing input and challenge to the P&L forecasts and cash flow forecasts where required; providing detailed analysis and understanding of general ledger items; offering appropriate challenge and support to the commercial teams; and assisting in work with Internal Audit to identify and correct sub-optimal internal controls and operating procedures.

What we are looking for in our Financial Accountant:

  • Part-qualified/newly qualified (ACA/CIMA/ACCA)
  • Previous experience of financial/management accounting and/or audit
  • Good technical accounting & analytical skills
  • Knowledge of SAP is desirable
  • Knowledge of IFRS/IAS
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
