Due to rapid growth, we are looking for a strong Financial Controller to join our VC-backed SaaS business.

You will be responsible for all operational finance and reporting, supported by our Finance Officer and reporting into our Finance Director, but working closely with colleagues from across the business.

We are an entrepreneurial organisation which is constantly evolving and exploring new markets, so are looking for someone who enjoys the challenge of putting rigorous processes in place to manage this complexity on an ongoing basis.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage the financial accounting processes and controls for the business
  • Own and manage the month end process, ensuring all necessary journals are posted and that accounts are closed in a timely manner
  • Produce high quality monthly reporting schedules (P&L with variance analysis, balance sheet, KPIs)
  • Support FD on annual budget preparation
  • Complete / oversee preparation of monthly balance sheet reconciliations
  • Ensure fixed asset register is maintained accurately
  • Maintain oversight of aged debtors, ensuring a rigorous credit control process is in place, and acting as an escalation point for payment issues
  • Put in place properly documented finance processes and ensure these are kept up to date, with a view to continuous process improvement
  • Supervise the work of the Finance Officer and cover his role (including payroll processing, billing, accounts payable) during periods of holiday or absence
  • Ad hoc data requests and analysis

We are looking for someone with the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) with at least three years PQE
  • Previous experience of both financial and management accounting (experience in a Financial Controller role desirable but not essential)
  • Excellent technical accounting skills and strong understanding of UK GAAP
  • Preferably some experience of complex revenue accounting
  • Sound understanding of VAT, PAYE, corporation tax and, ideally, R&D tax credits
  • Strong IT skills, including accounting software (Xero preferred but not essential) and advanced Excel skills, plus ideally PowerBI
  • Either evidence of working in an SME environment or clear evidence of a practical, action-oriented approach
  • Proven hands-on experience of implementing / improving finance processes
  • Experience of managing and developing staff
  • Understanding of software as a service (SaaS) business model
  • Experience in or an understanding of the further education / vocational training sector is an advantage

We are also looking for someone with the following personal qualities:

  • Intellectually capable, with strong analytical skills and a data-driven mindset
  • Positive energy and drive, with a can-do attitude and willingness to be hands-on when required
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills including the ability to convey complex or technical information to others simply and clearly
  • Maturity and confidence to challenge constructively where required and to deal assertively but professionally with clients/suppliers, when appropriate
  • Excellent organisational skills and strong process mindset
  • Flexibility to focus on big picture versus detail as required
  • Ability to thrive in a busy environment and work under pressure whilst maintaining standards
