About us
The world’s oldest, largest and best-known animal welfare charity, the RSPCA is as committed to alleviating suffering today as when we were founded in 1824. Approaching our bicentenary, the world in which we operate is more complex and challenging than ever. We investigate nearly 150,000 cases of alleged animal cruelty every year, helping to prevent continued suffering for, and improve the lives of, many thousands of animals.
Our vision is of a world where all animals are respected and treated with kindness and compassion. We’re here to ensure that animals have a good life by rescuing and caring for those in need, by advocating on behalf of all animals and by inspiring everyone to treat them with compassion and respect. Our new 2021-2030 strategy will build on this strong platform as we look towards our bicentenary and beyond; ultimately, our long-term success for animals depends on us helping people to help animals.
The role
The RSPCA operates on a significant scale, with a headcount of 1800 and turnover of around £140m in our last full year. We also answered 1.2 million phone calls, and took in over 68,000 animals.
This role will be vital in ensuring that the Society’s strategic finance capacity and business-critical operations effectively support the work we’re doing on the frontline.
The teams in your directorate are responsible not only for Finance, but also IT, Risk and Compliance, Procurement and Property. You’ll lead them to deliver a high-quality service to all stakeholders, strengthening their reputation for adding tangible value to our work.
Reporting directly to the CEO, you’ll be accountable for developing, implementing and overseeing a best-in-class financial strategy and risk framework, ensuring effective financial management and control and optimal use of charitable funds to achieve our priorities.
It’s important that we are seen to be operating with rigour, transparency and integrity, and this role will keep that promise.
Moreover, we want familiarity with financial best practice and budgets to become part of the everyday culture across the Society, and you’ll take ownership of embedding this new approach.
Candidate requirements
Candidates must be highly experienced and assured, with a track record of decisive leadership in an organisation of similar dimensions to the RSPCA. Calm and credible, you’ll be a respected and visible part of our senior strategic peer group.
We want to hear from people who bring more than just the FD skillset: for example, a nuanced understanding of business change, risk management, financial strategy or IT would be a distinct advantage. It’s important that you can lead autonomously, framing performance improvement as a way to help other parts of the organisation to achieve more too.
Our approach to finance and risk is positive and strategic, and you’ll instinctively understand that this role is about good stewardship rather than just keeping overheads low. Collaborative, open, communicative and with a high tolerance of ambiguity, you must share an absolute commitment to the ethos and work of the RSPCA.
