Your new company
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) is the flagship of musical life across Birmingham and the West Midlands. With an international reputation as one of the world’s greatest orchestras they have recently celebrated 100 years since their first ever concert. Based in Symphony Hall in Birmingham, CBSO gives over 150 concerts each year in the UK and around the world, playing music that ranges from classics to contemporary, film music and symphonic disco. With a far-reaching community programme and a family of world-class choruses and youth ensembles, it’s involved in every aspect of music-making in the region. CBSO are now recruiting an experienced Director of Finance & Resources to manage the strategic direction of the CBSO’s finances (turnover of c £10m) and oversee the efficient deployment of its other internal resource areas including IT, legal & other services.
Your new role
Reporting to the Chief Executive and as company secretary and a member of the senior management team you will play a key role in both the internal and external aspects of the CBSO’s operations. You will manage the finance, HR, IT, legal, risk and compliance functions for the organisation, providing a consistent and supportive service across the whole organisation. From a finance perspective you will produce long term plans, advise and challenge budget holders, prepare the annual reports and attend all Board & Audit Committee meetings. You will also manage the CBSO’s insurance portfolio and risk framework, provide support for all grant applications and determine the appropriate level of capital investment.
What you'll need to succeed
You will be a qualified accountant who has operated at Board level in a multi-stakeholder organisation and have a real interest in the arts including classical music. You will be capable and confident when presenting to a wide range of audiences and be able to do so in a way that captures interest. Your finance background will give you a detailed knowledge of financial and regulatory context in both the UK Charity and Company sectors alongside a proven track record of successful budgeting and strong financial controls. You will be an inspiring and enthusiastic leader and ideally have experience of managing multi-disciplinary teams. You will be able to work in a high-pressured environment with conflicting deadlines and as an individual you will have a good sense of humour and be collaborative by nature.
