About the Organisation
The National Space Centre Charity (No. 1078832) has a mission to get people excited about space and help develop the next generation of scientists and engineers.

It achieves its mission & objectives through the activities of three business units: The 'National Space Centre', 'NSC Discovery' and 'NSC Creative'.

The Charity is overseen by a Board of Trustees and is managed by a subsidiary operating company. It presently turns over £7 per annum and employs 150 people. It receives no public funds towards its operating costs, instead relying on earned income. It raises funds to help support its education & community engagement work.

Summary of the Role
The successful candidate will become an Executive Director of NSSC Operations Ltd ('Opco') - the Charity's subsidiary operating company. Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will be responsible for:

* Playing a full role in the origination & development of the Charity's 'Ten Year Vision' and rolling 'Three-Year Business Plan'. You will prepare a detailed annual budget and a minimum of two mid-year forecasts.
* Overseeing the Charity's finance function & management of the finance team. Originate finance strategy & manage policies incl. banking, reserves, investment, cash-flow, payment & procurement. Maintain a good working relationship with the Charity's banking providers, auditors, insurers, lawyers & other professional service providers. Review procedures & recommend change / consider the merits of further digitisation.
* Oversee the presentation of monthly management accounts (incl. profit & loss, cash-flow forecast & balance sheet) to the Executive Team & Opco Board. Analyse performance against budget & forecast, present appropriate KPI indicators & report accordingly. Present periodic management accounts to the Board of Trustees.
* Service the Audit Committee and manage the appointment of the Auditor. Facilitate the audit of the annual accounts & submission of statutory accounts. Take initial responsibility for implementing any recommendations made by the Auditor / Audit Committee.
* Manage the Company Secretary, Personnel and Health & Safety functions.
* Adhoc Project Work: Join teams & committees as required, incl. (but not limited to) the Finance Committee, Remuneration Committee & Projects Committee.

The Person With 'The Right Stuff'
The Finance Director role has hitherto been fulfilled on a part-time basis (circa four days per week), with the support of an experienced part-time senior accountant & a team of part-time accounts clerks.

The Charity has promoted the senior accountant to the role of Financial Controller, with responsibility for management of the team and the compilation and presentation of the accounts. It seeks a Finance Director to oversee the performance of the Finance Team and other functions stated above, but otherwise act strategically in providing a comprehensive, future-focussed service.

The successful candidate should:
* Be available to start early spring 2022.
* Be a qualified / chartered accountant (ACA, CIMA, ACCA or equivalent).
* Have a demonstrable track-record at Board Director level, with solid experience of originating strategy & presenting board reports.
* Possess a broad understanding of business & effective communication, presentation & management skills to all levels, incl. the Company Secretary, Personnel and Health & Safety functions.
*Thrive in a fast-paced environment, adaptable & responsive to challenges posed by trading conditions & Government regulation.
* Share in the Charity's vision, mission & purpose, as well as commitment to matters relating to employee welfare, diversity & the low-carbon agenda.
* Enjoy representing the Charity at events on & off-site, incl. during the evening & weekends.
* Expect to contribute fully to the wellbeing of the Charity, helping identify income-generating, fundraising & cost-saving opportunities.
