Qualified technical accountant required for 9 month FTC, starting end of January 2022


Your new company
Main Purpose: The post holder is responsible for managing the integrity of the group (x 2 very small subsidiaries) financial statutory accounts, balance sheet and associated regulations and policies reporting to the Director of Finance & SP. The post holder is also responsible for the day to day operational management of BSU treasury policy including cash, short term deposits and investment strategy reporting to the Director of Finance & SP.

Your new role
● Statutory Accounts preparation including preparing draft stat accounts from trial balance and managing the year end time table to ensure the accounts are completed in a timely way, liaising with other finance colleagues as appropriate.
● Act as first point of contact with external advisors:
○ Auditors ○ VAT consultants ○ Tax and other financial advice.
● Prepare and provide commentary on some elements of quarterly/annual reporting pack for Board (cash flow, balance sheet).
● Re-establish high level regular cash flow forecasting including overview of main current account balance and aged-debtor reports.
● Implementation of treasury management policy ensuring optimal return on any cash or short term deposits by placing money as appropriate.
● Review and co-ordination of balance-sheet reconciliations of statutory areas, including tax, investments, and goodwill.
● Review of balance sheet reconciliations for control accounts including accruals and prepayments (prepared by FP&A team and Financial Operations team)
● Responsible for VAT quarterly submission (oversight of other inputs from other finance colleagues).
● To work with the wider Finance team acting as a source of advice and guidance on technical financial accounting queries (including Tax and VAT).
● Working with the accounts payable and management accounting teams to ensure our accounting systems capture the necessary data for financial accounting, VAT and tax requirements
● To carry out such duties as are required and as are commensurate with the grade of the post.
● Review published financial regulations and ensure up to date and fit for purpose.
● Review financial policies and ensure up to date and fit for purpose.
● Oversight of fixed asset register including conducting annual asset register check.

What you'll need to succeed
Qualifications/Experience;
● Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIPFA)
● To have proven experience of successfully leading annual statutory accounts reporting cycle through to completion.
● Experience of preparation of financial statements and other financial reports.
● To either have knowledge of Dream accounting software package or proven experience of picking up new accounting software in a short space of time.
● Proven experience creating a documented process around a previously unstructured business operation/activity.

Skills & Knowledge:
● In depth understanding of current UK GAAP and FRS including FRS 102 and Further/Higher Education.
● To have in depth knowledge of Excel.
● To have in depth knowledge of HMRC VAT and corporation tax submissions and requirements.
● Ability to prepare high quality management and financial reports for board level packs.
● Ability to communicate technical accounting advice to colleagues or non-finance staff.
● Knowledge of pension accounting for statutory accounts.

Desirable:
● To have experience of drafting the financial statements of an organisation in the HE sector.
● Knowledge of HE pension environment
