Financial & Systems Accountant Leeds, Hybrid £28,000 - £34,000

Are you a qualified or part-qualified accountant looking for a new challenge?
Do you enjoy using your IT and systems skills to process and interpret complex financial information and communicate this in a proactive and engaging manner? If so, then this can be the role for you!

You will be a significant member of the Financial Accounting team (part of the Financial Services team), supporting the Financial Reporting Manager in delivering the internal and external financial reporting of balance sheets. This is a key role in ensuring accurate balance sheet reporting and effective controls. The successful candidate will use systems knowledge to interrogate and analyse data, flagging inconsistencies where appropriate. It will provide you with an opportunity to build experience of all aspects of financial accounting within a large, complex organisation.

As Financial & Systems Accountant your main duties will include:

  • Responsibility for performing the month-end and year-end close down of the financial ledgers (using SAP system);
  • Responsibility for monitoring monthly balance sheet reconciliation process, including preparation of certain reconciliations and the investigation and resolution of any issues;
  • Assisting the Finance Reporting Manager with the preparation of balance sheet reporting and forecasting;
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of processes and controls, and making recommendations for improvements where necessary;
  • Analysing and reporting data in order to inform decision making;
  • Reporting of monthly capital expenditure and variance to forecasts;
  • Creation and posting of specific monthly general ledger journals;
  • Producing year-end balance sheet schedules to support statutory accounts disclosures;
  • Responsible for preparing certain statutory and regulatory returns.

The successful candidate is expected to have experience of balance sheet reporting and understand the role of processes and controls in financial systems. They will also be experienced and confident in extracting data from, and adding/updating accounts records to, a complex ERP system. Analysing and interpreting data to influence decision making will also be required. The right candidate will be flexible self-starter with a creative approach to problem solving, using initiative and an adaptable approach as well as hold or be working towards, a recognised accountancy qualification or be part-qualified, or be qualified by experience. Experience or understanding of working in higher education, and use of SAP are highly desirable but not essential.
